RAY CHARLES DONATES ANOTHER $1 MILLION TO
MOREHOUSE COLLEGE

ATLANTA, September 20, 2001 - Legendary recording artist Ray Charles (left) donated $1 million to Morehouse College today. The surprise gift was presented to Morehouse President Walter E. Massey (center) by Charles' manager Joe Adams (right) during a ceremony at which the Grammy winning singer received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

The gift brings to $2 million the amount the newly designated "Dr." Ray Charles has donated this year to the all-male school. Earlier this year, during the College's annual gala, called "A Candle in the Dark," Charles received the Morehouse College prestigious Candle Award for Lifetime Achievement in Arts and Entertainment. The money will be used to build a performing arts center.

Ranked the number one college in the nation for educating African American students by Black Enterprise magazine, Morehouse College is the nation's largest liberal arts college for men. Founded in 1867, the College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor's degrees on more black men than any other institution in the nation.

Prominent alumni include civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher; filmmaker Shelton "Spike" Lee; academy award nominee Samuel L. Jackson and Atlanta's first African-American mayor Maynard Jackson.
