SPIRITUAL AWARENESS WEEK CLOSES INTERNATIONAL NON-VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN WITH FOCUS ON GANDHI AND CONTEMPORARY ISSUES

Atlanta, March 21, 2000 - Spiritual Awareness Week at Morehouse College - March 26 through April 2 - will close the 64-day "A Season for Nonviolence," an international campaign that was designed to promote nonviolent community change, healing and empowerment. In addition to a week of religious lectures, representing a variety of denominations and faiths, the week will feature a discussion by the Rev. Jesse Jackson on the murder of Amadou Diallo, who was shot by New York police outside his apartment a year ago. The week will also include two sermons by the Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith of Agape International Center of Truth of Los Angeles, and feature 100 members of its 150-voice choir. Honorary degrees will be conferred on Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturbai, his wife.

One of the most distinguished institutions of higher education, Morehouse College is the nation's only historically black, private liberal arts college for men. Founded in 1867, the College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor's degrees on more black men than any other institution in the world.
