GENERAL MOTORS PROVIDES SIGNIFICANT BOOST TO MOREHOUSE ENGINEERING PROGRAMS

ATLANTA, GA, May 2, 2000 - A $571,620 contribution by the General Motors Partners for the Advancement of CAD/CAM/CAE Education (PACE) will allow Morehouse College dual-degree engineering students to design, assemble and test products on donated computer equipment and software.

As a participant, Morehouse will receive two Unigraphics software licenses, two workstations, and Unigraphics training for staff within the next two weeks. The students, faculty and staff will be able to sample the software and integrate the technology into the curriculum by this fall.

The PACE Project is an alliance formed by Unigraphics Solutions, Sun Microsystems, EDS, and General Motors. The program provides CAD/CAM/CAE software, workstations, maintenance support, and appropriate training to GM's Engineering Key Institutions as a philanthropic contribution.

"This project is designed to enhance the skills of engineering students in the areas of product design, engineering analysis, and manufacturing by exposing them to state-of-the-art product development tools and manufacturing processes," said Dr. Olusegun Adeyemi, a Morehouse physics professor.

"It is becoming increasingly important to recruit and re-educate individuals to perform the function of designer/engineer/analyst - or, the engineer who combines product design skills, engineering capabilities, and first order analysis in what has become an ever-more complex industry," said Valerie Catchings, university relations team coordinator for General Motors.

One of the most distinguished institutions of higher education, Morehouse College is the nation's only historically black, private liberal arts college for men. Founded in 1867, the College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor's degrees on more black men than any other institution in the world. In addition to offering 36 majors in the humanities, natural and social sciences, Morehouse provides a number of programs and activities to enhance its challenging liberal arts program, including the Leadership Center at Morehouse College, the Morehouse Research Institute, and the Andrew Young Center for International Affairs.

Prominent alumni include Martin Luther King Jr., Nobel Peace Prize laureate and civil rights leader; Dr. David Satcher, U.S. Surgeon General; Henry W. Foster Jr., professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Meharry Medical School; Arthur E. Johnson, president and COO for Lockheed Martin Information Services Sector; Peter Chatard, plastic surgeon and founder of the Chatard Plastic Surgery Center and the Aesteem Outpatient Surgery Center; Louis Sullivan, president of the Morehouse School of Medicine and former secretary of health and human services; and Roderic Pettigrew, physician and nuclear physicist.
