Morehouse College Hosts Salzburg Seminar

ATLANTA, Nov. 2, 2000 - Morehouse College President Walter E. Massey and Mrs. Shirley Massey will bring a new global community to the campus by hosting a historic meeting of the Salzburg Seminar Board Nov. 8 to 11. This is the first time in the organization's 52-year history that a board meeting will be held at a historically black college or university.

Every year, the Salzburg Seminar (www.Salzburgseminar.org) hosts 1,000 professionals from more than 100 countries at its 18th century castle in Salzburg, Austria, to discuss global, political, social and cultural issues. These meetings of high-profile professionals provide a neutral environment to discuss differing viewpoints and establish global networks to help affect enlightened change in the future.

At Morehouse, international academic professionals will join Dr. and Mrs. Massey, who are board members, for several executive meetings, tours of the campus and a reception at the President's home Saturday.

"This is a phenomenal opportunity for Morehouse," said Dr. Massey. "The Salzburg Seminar is one of the world's foremost international educational centers. Its commitment to broadening the perspectives of tomorrow's leaders fits perfectly with what we accomplish at Morehouse.

"The Seminar is a place for reflection and connection and forces everyone to challenge his or her beliefs on political, social and economic dynamics of international affairs, " said Dr. Massey.

The Salzburg Seminar, long regarded as a leading forum for free and open dialogue on global issues, is committed to uniting individuals who will strive to guide the world in an intelligent and humane manner in a new century. The Seminar is funded by a variety of corporate and not-for-profit organizations from around the country.

One of the most distinguished institutions of higher education, Morehouse College is the nation's only historically black, private liberal arts college for men. Founded in 1867, the College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor's degrees on more black men than any other institution in the world. In addition to offering 36 majors in the humanities, natural and social sciences, Morehouse provides a number of programs and activities to enhance its challenging liberal arts curriculum, including the Leadership Center at Morehouse College, the Morehouse Research Institute, and the Andrew Young Center for International Affairs.

Prominent alumni include Martin Luther King Jr., Nobel Peace Prize laureate and civil rights leader; Dr. David Satcher, U.S. Surgeon General; Sheldon "Spike" Lee, filmmaker and president of 40 Acres & A Mule Productions; Maynard H. Jackson, president of Jackson Securities and the first African-American mayor of Atlanta; and Nima A. Warfield, the first African-American Rhodes Scholar from an historically black college or university.
