MOREHOUSE RECEIVES $25,000 GRANT FROM THE UNITED PARCEL SERVICE FOUNDATION
ATLANTA, Nov.
10 - Morehouse College has received a $25,000 grant from The UPS Foundation,
the charitable arm of the United Parcel Service. The grant will be used to fund
10 scholarships, worth $2,500 each, for students in the College's community
service program.
"We take pride
in being a good neighbor and in being active in improving the quality of the
surrounding community," said Morehouse President Walter E. Massey. "Our community
service program is an important part of that process, so we are very appreciative
and extremely pleased to receive this gift from the UPS Foundation, which will
help us continue educating bright minds for the future."
The UPS Foundation,
founded in 1951, supports education and human welfare issues, focusing on two
major initiatives Ð adult literacy, and prepared and perishable food distribution.
Corporate grants benefiting organizations or programs such as the Morehouse
College Community Service Program address diverse concerns that are national
in scope and within the Foundation's major initiatives.
One of the most
distinguished institutions of higher education, Morehouse College is the nation's
only historically black, private liberal arts college for men. Founded in 1867,
the College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor's degrees
on more black men than any other
institution in the world. In addition to offering 36 majors in the humanities,
natural and social sciences, Morehouse provides a number of programs and activities
to enhance its challenging liberal arts program, including the Leadership Center
at Morehouse College, the Morehouse Research Institute, and the Andrew Young
Center for International Affairs.
Prominent alumni include Martin Luther King Jr., Nobel Peace Prize laureate and civil rights leader; Dr. David Satcher, U.S. Surgeon General; Sheldon "Spike" Lee, filmmaker and president of 40 Acres & A Mule Productions; Maynard H. Jackson, president of Jackson Securities and the first African-American mayor of Atlanta; and Nima A. Warfield, the first African-American Rhodes Scholar from a historically black college or university.
