JESSE JACKSON WILL SPEAK DURING THE COCA-COLA LEADERSHIP LECTURE SERIES AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE
ATLANTA, October
6, 1999 - The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who has led movements for empowerment,
peace, civil rights, gender equality, and economic and social justice, will
speak during The Coca-Cola Leadership Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct.
25, in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. The Lecture Series is
sponsored by The Leadership Center at Morehouse College.
"Leadership Strategies
for International Diplomacy and Negotiation" is the theme of the lecture by
Rev. Jackson, who last spring traveled to Belgrade to negotiate the release
of three American soldiers who were captured while patrolling the Yugoslav-Macedonian
border.
"Rev. Jackson's
active role in leading social change during the last 30 years provides an authentic
and contemporary leadership perspective that enhances our students' academic
experience," said Walter Earl Fluker, director of the Leadership Center at Morehouse
College.
"Rev. Jackson's
dynamic leadership in international affairs is a topic sorely neglected in the
growing field of leadership studies," said Dr. Fluker. "Hopefully, our lecture
series will provide an opportunity for critical analysis of Rev. Jackson's perspective
on leadership strategies for diplomacy and negotiation."
Endowed by The
Coca-Cola Foundation, the lecture provides an opportunity for world-class leaders
to share insights about leadership as well as the challenges and opportunities
likely to confront tomorrow's leaders. The leadership lecture is held once each
semester. Last spring the lecture featured Pulitzer Prize winning author and
scholar James MacGregor Burns.
"The dialogue that
evolves from the lectures allow students to critically evaluate their thinking
on various topics," said Dr. Fluker. "Our desire is for students to understand
- in real terms - the responsibility, determination and internal strength required
to become a new millennium leader. Rev. Jackson's willingness to offer his insight
to young African-American males - as he has done for years Ð is an honor the
College sincerely appreciates."
Founded in 1867,
