MASSEY TO SPEAK AT 81ST ACE CONFERENCE
ATLANTA, January 19 Morehouse President Dr. Walter E. Massey will deliver the opening address at the 81st annual meeting of the American Council on Education (ACE), Feb. 13-16, in Washington, D.C.
Along with Massey, other featured speakers at the meeting include Federal Review Board Chairman Alan Greenspan; former American Red Cross President Elizabeth Dole; Presidential Scholar Michael Beschloss; Harvard University President Emeritus Derek Bok; and Mellon Foundation President William G. Bowen.
ACE is the nation's umbrella higher education association and is dedicated to the belief that equal educational opportunity and a strong higher education system are essential cornerstones of a democratic society. Its approximately 1,800 members include accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities from all sectors of higher education and other education an education-related organizations. ACE is a forum for the discussion of major issues related to higher education and its potential to contribute to the quality of American life.
Founded in 1867, Morehouse is the nations only historically black, private liberal arts college for men. The College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and graduates 500 each year, conferring bachelors degrees on more black men than any other institution in the world.
Prominent alumni include Martin Luther King Jr., Nobel Peace Prize laureate and civil rights leader; David Satcher, U.S. surgeon general and director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Samuel L. Jackson, motion picture actor and Academy Award nominee; Spike Lee, filmmaker and president of 40 Acres and A Mule Productions; Edwin C. Moses, Olympic gold medalist and financial consultant for Robinson-Humphrey Co. Inc. and Nima A. Warfield, the first African-American Rhodes Scholar from a historically black college or university.
