LAWRENCE SMALL AND ROBERT JOHNSON TO HOST RECEPTION IN WASHINGTON, D.C., FOR MOREHOUSE COLLEGE
ATLANTA, Sept. 17, 1998 - Lawrence M. Small, president and COO of Fannie Mae - the nation's largest source of home mortgage funds - and Robert Johnson, president and CEO of Black Entertainment Television Holdings Inc., will host a reception for Morehouse College. The event, called Morehouse on the Move (MOM), will be held Monday, Sept. 28, at the Fannie Mae headquarters in Washington, D.C. More than 300 guests are expected to attend.
Small and Johnson are hosting the reception to acquaint Washington, D.C.-area business, political and community leaders with Morehouse, the Atlanta-based, historically black college for men. Prominent alumni include: Martin Luther King Jr., Noble Peace Prize laureate and civil rights leader; David Satcher, U.S. surgeon general and assistant secretary for health; Louis W. Sullivan, Morehouse School of Medicine president and former health and human services secretary; Donald R. Hopkins, senior consultant for The Carter Center and director of its Guinea Worm Eradication Program; Maynard H. Jackson, chairman and CEO of Jackson Securities Inc. and the first African-American mayor of Atlanta; Samuel L. Jackson, motion picture actor and Academy Award nominee; Spike Lee, filmmaker and president of 40 Acres and A Mule Productions; and Edwin C. Moses, Olympic gold medalist and financial consultant for Robinson-Humphrey Co. Inc.
During the reception, Morehouse President Walter E. Massey will discuss the College's academic mission and future plans. Massey, a 1958 Morehouse graduate, returned to the College in 1995 as its ninth president.
"Morehouse on the Move is a national awareness campaign to present my strategic plan in targeted cities across the country," Massey said. "The College's fine reputation for producing outstanding leaders has existed for more than 131 years, and we plan to build on that tradition as we strive to make Morehouse one of the finest liberal art colleges in the world."
The pilot MOM event was held last August on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts at the vacation home of famed author Bebe Moore Campbell and her husband, Ellis Gordon Jr., a Los Angeles banker. It was hosted by Campbell, Gordon, Morehouse alumnus and board of trustee member Robert Davidson, and his wife, Faye.
The second MOM reception was held in Chicago last November and was hosted by talk show host Oprah Winfrey and John Bryan, CEO of Sara Lee Corp. Bank of America Chairman and CEO Dave Coulter teamed with Grammy award-winning producer and composer Quincy Jones to host the third event this past March in Los Angeles.
Founded in 1867, Morehouse is the nation's only historically black, private liberal arts college for men. The College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and graduates about 500 each year, conferring bachelor's degrees on more black men than any other institution in the world.
