ATLANTA, FEBRUARY 14, 2002 On Thursday, February 14, 2002, Morehouse College will receive a four-ton gift of history from Boston University. BU is presenting the College with the four original facing stones from the base of its memorial sculpture honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King is an alumnus of both Boston University and Morehouse College. Each granite panel is more than six feet high and four inches thick. The front and rear panels are nearly four feet across and the two side panels are nearly six feet long. Combined, they weigh more than 8,000 pounds. Each of the panels is inscribed, one with a dedication to King and the other three with some of King's most inspiring words. Also on Thursday, Morehouse College will pay tribute to the founders of the institution with a special Convocation. The guest speaker for the Convocation will be The Reverend Canon Anthony Cardova Campbell, professor of Homiletics and Preacher in Residence at Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. Honorary Degree recipients will also be presented at the Founders' Day Convocation. Founded in 1867, the College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor's degrees on more black men than any other institution in the world. Prominent alumni include Martin Luther King, Jr., Nobel Peace Prize laureate and civil rights leader; Dr. David Satcher, U.S. Surgeon General; Sheldon "Spike" Lee, filmmaker and president of 40 Acres & A Mule Productions; Maynard H. Jackson, president of Jackson Securities and the first African-American mayor of Atlanta; and Nima A.. Warfield, the first African-American Rhodes Scholar from an historically black college or university. |
