ATLANTA -For the second consecutive year, Morehouse College has won the National Championship at the 2002 Honda Campus All-star Challenge (HCASC). The HCASC is an annual academic competition among the best and brightest students from the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Morehouse students showcased their skills by accurately answering questions on world history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social sciences, popular culture and African-American history and culture. More than 320 students from 64 HBCUs across the country competed in the three-day tournament for more than $300,000 in institutional grants. The tournament was held in Orlando, Florida last weekend. As the HCASC National Champion, Morehouse will take home a $50,000 grant. Runner-up Howard University will take home a $26,000 grant. "This is a tremendous victory for our students and their coaches," said Morehouse College President Dr. Walter E. Massey. "I could not be more proud of the way they have demonstrated - for the second year in a row - their uncompromising commitment to hard work and academic excellence. They are champions in the truest sense." Nearly 100 HBCU presidents, educators, alumni and community volunteers attended this year's event, themed "Friends for Life," to support the participating students. Morehouse teammates included senior English and Pre-Law major Jadun O. McCarthy, sophomore Spanish and International Studies major John Thomas III, sophomore Drama and International Studies major Rubani Isa Trimiew, freshman Political Science major Christopher E. Lee, Senior Computer Science major Justin Wingo. The team coach is Dr. Anderson Cornelius Williams, Associate Professor of Economics and Business. Since the inception of the Honda All-star
Challenge, more than 15,000 students have participated, and Honda has
awarded nearly $3.5 million in grants to HBCUs to improve campus life
through facility improvements and increasing academic resources. Ranked the number one college in the nation for educating African American students by Black Enterprise magazine, Morehouse College is the nation's largest liberal arts college for men. Founded in 1867, the College enrolls approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor's degrees on more black men than any other institution in the world. In addition to offering 36 majors in the humanities, natural and social sciences, Morehouse offers a number of programs and activities to enhance its challenging liberal arts curriculum through the Leadership Center at Morehouse College, Morehouse Research Institute, and Andrew Young Center for International Affairs. Prominent alumni include Martin Luther King Jr., Nobel Peace Prize laureate and civil rights leader; Dr. David Satcher, U.S. Surgeon General; Sheldon "Spike" Lee, filmmaker and president of 40 Acres & A Mule Productions; Maynard H. Jackson, president of Jackson Securities and the first African-American mayor of Atlanta; and Nima A. Warfield, the first African-American Rhodes Scholar from an historically black college or university. |
