Construction
The Leadership Center is a state-of-the-art facility costing approximately
$13 million. The 73,000-square-foot Center is scheduled to open
in 2005.
Exterior
The objective of the building’s architectural design is
to maintain the traditional character of Morehouse College while
projecting the image of 21st century leadership.
The exterior
of the building captures the beauty of the main campus with its
traditional red brick accented with white stone bands. Bay windows
encased in white stone adorn the east and west ends of the building.
All windows are trimmed in the lighter stone, including a series
of vertically spanned windows in the midsection. Adding to the
appeal of the building is the gabled and pitched roof, which creates
intriguing rooflines.
In addition,
there are two exterior plazas. The primary plaza, located on Westview,
is a pedestrian plaza with decorated stone inlays and landscaped
foliage. The secondary plaza, located on Wellborn, is marked by
a curved driveway where drivers can unload passengers under an
arched, covered walkway.
Interior
The interior of the building is designed to accommodate the vast
array of educational, administrative and conference needs of the
programs housed in the facility and the campus overall. The building
contains five distinct areas: the conference center and auditorium;
the academic areas; administrative spaces; and an Internet Lab.
These areas are described as follows:
Conference
Center & Auditorium
The Conference Center, which includes a pre-function area and
lobby, can accommodate 300 to 500 guests. The space also can be
used for formal banquets.
The Bank of
America Auditorium will seat 300 and is equipped with state-of-the-art
audio/visual equipment including a ceiling-mounted projector and
a smart podium. Meeting room area can be partitioned for any combination
up to six breakout rooms, each accommodating up to 50 people.
Both of these
areas are fully equipped for professional presentations, exhibits
or seminars.
Academic
Areas
There are two large classrooms designed to accommodate 50 students
each. The partition dividing the classrooms can be removed to
create one large classroom that will seat 100 students.
The Leadership
Center contains 11 tiered lecture rooms. Each of these lecture
rooms will accommodate 35 students, and all lecture areas are
fully equipped with data and power outlets in the floors and walls.
There are
eight seminar rooms, each accommodating 16 to 20 students each.
These rooms are furnished with projection screens and smart boards,
as well as U-shaped tables that provide a more intimate interaction
between students and instructors.
Administrative
Spaces
There are administrative spaces on each floor that include reception
and lobby areas, administrative support offices, copy centers,
staff break rooms and faculty and departmental chair offices.
In addition, there are departmental conference rooms on each floor
furnished with data and power outlets, a portable projector and
retractable screens.
Internet
Lab
The Internet Lab has 45 computer workstations, including two that
are specially equipped for wheelchair-bound students. In addition,
there is a faculty workstation and a printer station.
Technology
Throughout its various areas, the Leadership Center features state-of-the
art computer and information technology that promotes collaboration
and interaction among students, faculty, administration and staff.
Users can also access information in a wireless Internet lab,
then manipulate it from a networked computer workstation. Instructors
can use multimedia boards—also called smart boards—in
their lecture rooms to digitally capture, recall, and project
their written notes. The goal is to expand the educational experience
exponentially through technological innovation and a commitment
to excellence.
