Application Process
Applicants for financial aid must complete the FAFSA or FAFSA Renewal Application. Applying for financial aid can be overwhelming, therefore, we have listed a few key points to assist you.
* The most important document is the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) or Renewal Application for Financial Aid. The
information you provide on this form will help us to determine your
eligibility for financial aid, so be sure to fill it out completely
and legibly.
* Start filling out the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA as soon
as possible. You must provide your social security number (SSN) to
apply for Federal student financial aid.
* Include your full name and social security number
on each letter or document that you submit to the Office of Financial
Aid.
* Keep photocopies of everything, including the FAFSA
and federal income tax form(s).
* Do not submit tax return information with your FAFSA
application when you mail it to the Federal Processor.
* Do not submit your FAFSA or FAFSA Renewal Application
to the Office of Financial Aid.
STUDENT AID REPORT
A Student Aid Report (SAR) will be mailed to you approximately
4-6 weeks after submitting the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA for processing.
The U.S Department of Education will provide your information to
the Office of Financial Aid, if you listed our federal school code
(001582). Applicants whose files are completed on or before April
1 will be considered for all available funds. Keep your original
SAR for your records. We will receive your SAR electronically.
2007 FEDERAL INCOME TAX RETURN
Only students selected for verification are required
to submit tax returns. If you are selected, an asterisk (*) will
appear on the SAR next to the Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
and the SAR will provide a message requesting that you contact your
school regarding submitting additional documents. If selected, please
provide copies of any and all 2007 tax documents submitted to the IRS.
Include copies of corporate and partnership returns, if applicable.
All tax documents must be mailed directly to the Office of Financial
Aid at Morehouse College as early as possible. (DO NOT MAIL TAX
RETURNS TO THE FEDERAL PROCESSOR). We will review tax returns with
your electronic SAR, make adjustments as required by law, and determine
your eligibility for aid.
FINANCIAL AID TRANSCRIPT (FAT)
You must request that a FAT be sent to Morehouse College
from all schools Attended since high school.
PARENTAL INFORMATION REQUIRED FOR DEPENDENTAPPLICANTS
Dependent applicants must provide parent and student
information on the FAFSA. However, applicants disputing the definition,
will be required to submit supporting documentation regarding dependency
status. Please review Student Status, Step Three on the FAFSA, for
details on the dependency definition.
LATE FILERS
Funds are limited. If your FAFSA or tax returns are
received after the stated deadline, you will be considered a late
filer. Exceptions to the April 1, deadline will not be made due
to IRS extensions. Later file review and award notification will
begin mid-summer. LATE FILERS ARE NOT NORMALLY AWARDED FEDERAL PERKINS
LOAN, FEDERAL WORK STUDY OR FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
GRANT.
WHEN TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID
Although there is no deadline to apply for financial
aid, if you wish to be considered for student employment or low-interest
loan funds, such as the Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Work Study
and FSEOG Grant, please adhere to the recommended dates on the checklist.
Awards are final unless documentation is received regarding special circumstances that warrant an adjustment of the initial award. After the information is received and evaluated by the Financial Aid Advisor, a revised award letter will be sent to you, if necessary. Please note that all additional information should be submitted as soon as possible to ensure that the awards are processed in a timely manner.
If you filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submitted all required documents free from error to the Office of Financial Aid by the priority deadline (April 1, 2008), you will be notified after April 15, 2008. To assure timely consideration for financial aid, you should respond promptly to any requests for additional information. For further information, call the Office of Financial Aid, (404) 215-2638.
