PHSI Internship Program
The Public Health Sciences Institute (PHSI) Internship is a two-year research internship offering comprehensive academic and research experiences in various fields of public health to selected students from the Atlanta University Center (AUC). DEADLINE: March 1st
To qualify as a candidate for the PHSI internship a student must currently be a Sophomore with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. Each applicant must submit the following materials:
- An application (pdf)
- An official college transcript
- Two letters of recommendation
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae
- A one-page essay describing the applicant’s interest in public health
Interns for this program are selected on a competitive basis. Candidates are selected on the basis of their application, knowledge of public health, essay and personal interview. Typically, one interns from each undergraduate college/university in the AUC will be selected each academic year.
Selected interns will be issued a monthly stipend and are required to successfully complete the following requirements during their internship tenure:
Public Health Courses
Each intern must enroll in and pass each of the following classes with a B average or better. Morehouse student interns may pursue a public health science minor.
Introduction to Public Health: Course designed
to give students a strong foundation in the administration
and practice of public health (3 hour).
Introduction to Epidemiology: Course
that emphasizes the distribution and determinants
of health-related states and events in a population (3
hour).
Biostatistics: Course designed for
applications of statistics in the biomedical health
sciences (3 hour).
Public Health Seminar and Practicum:
Course designed to provide students with a forum
for discussion and critical analysis of contemporary
health care issues and provide a practical experience
in a health service agency (3 hour).
Public Health Elective: Public health
related course that is selected from offered in the
AUC (3 hour).
Research Project
Each intern must develop a research project with a
preceptor from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) and devote a minimum of 10 hours per week (with
a maximum of 15) to that project. Note: These time commitments
are flexible considering other academic and extra curricular
obligations.
Community Service
Each intern must be involved in regular community service
projects, including those organized by the AUC Public Health
Club. Interns may select a service organization of their
choice or have one selected for them by the Research Coordinator.
Attendance
Attendance at AUC Public Health Association meetings
and presentation of research work at local symposia (e.g.
Public Health Awareness Conference held in the month of
April), national (e.g. American Public Health Association
Conference held in the month of November) and/or regional
conferences (e.g. Georgia Public Health Association (GPHA)
Conference – held in the fall) on public health is mandatory.
